90 seconds for 1 metre of safety

On January 10, 2010, storm front “Daisy” raged in the Lübeck Bay, forced its way up the Kiel Fjord and left its mark. The result was flooding and immeasurable damage where otherwise only beautiful sandy beaches can be seen. Since then, the authorities in Timmendorf have been relying on the mobile flood protection system from terra infrastructure.
The new system is characterized by its quick assembly without the need for special training. Every 90 seconds, one meter of safety “grows”. Assuming a post spacing of 3 meters, a wall height of 1 meter and a team of four, the assembly time for a wall segment (one intermediate post plus five 200-millimeter stop logs) is about 4.5 minutes, i.e. around 1.5 minutes per meter of wall length. Around 10 square kilometers of low-lying land, about 4600 inhabitants, almost 2000 jobs, mainly in the tourism sector, and material assets worth billions are now protected by the new flood protection systems.
terra infrastructure developed the new mobile flood barrier system, the “terra flood defense system”, in cooperation with the Technical University of Berlin and Rosslauer Schiffswerft GmbH & Co. Flood and coastal protection measures were implemented over a length of 4.9 kilometers in five construction phases. They essentially comprise revetments and protective walls, some of which are raised to the necessary height of 4 meters above mean sea level by means of filter cartridges in the fall.
The mobile flood protection system from terra infrastructure works reliably in all weather conditions and can be quickly and easily set up without the need for special training. The key element of the dismountable stop log wall is the unique, newly developed intermediate post. All parts to be embedded in concrete are made of galvanized steel.
Conventional assembly with screws is no longer necessary.
- No other tools (wrenches, socket wrench inserts, etc.) are required.
- Resistant to changing sands.
- Low maintenance.
- Posts can be removed quickly and easily.
- Theft-proof.
- Attractive design for tourist and public areas.
- Significantly faster assembly time; the wall is quickly ready for use.
