UNOBSTRUCTED VIEW: GLASS WALLS IN NEUFELDERKOOG.
Long-term flood protection – glass wall system
Coastal regions are among the most beautiful places where we spend our time. However, it is precisely there that the inevitable flood protection systems restrict the view of the sea. The measures in Neufelderkoog on the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein show that this does not have to be the case.

Here, a flood protection wall with glass elements protects residents and visitors from storm surges. The glass breaks up the appearance of the approximately 800-metre-long flood protection wall and also preserves the unobstructed view of the sea at these points. For the buildings directly behind the flood protection wall, the glass panes provide sufficient daylight and a good view through the windows. And for the ‘Op'n Dieck’ restaurant, the glass panels are a welcome barrier around the outdoor terrace.

Coastal areas popular with tourists need flood protection measures that not only provide safety but also take into account the needs of the local economy and the well-being of residents.
The flood-prone Neufelderkoog region is a beautiful area that attracts many visitors because of the beautiful view of the dike landscape. With a conventional flood protection solution made of brickwork or concrete, this panorama would be lost. The situation is different when glass is used.

Filtering cartridges are used to filter liquids and gases. They are available in many different designs, depending on the application.

The basic structure for the flood protection barrier in Neufelderkoog is a reinforced concrete wall founded on sheet piles and covered with brickwork. This forms a stable anchoring for the steel frames that hold the 68-millimetre-thick panes of laminated safety glass without constraint. Each individual glass pane measures 100 x 120 centimetres and weighs around 160 kilograms. They were specially developed and manufactured for this project.

The sturdy washers made of laminated safety glass provide the best possible protection against storm surges. They also screen out wind and noise and form a safety barrier. The dimensions of the washers were chosen so that they can withstand the loads, but at the same time the glass has a high aesthetic quality. This allows visitors to continue to enjoy the picturesque view of the dike landscape.
