E+S LINEAR SHORING: SEWER REHABILITATION WORK IN LEIPZIG
Construction of a spillwayIn the summer of 2020, REIF Baugesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, Schkeuditz, carried out the work for the third construction phase for the rehabilitation of the existing combined sewers on behalf of the Leipzig Waterworks. The main components of the project included the construction of a storage sewer with bottom relief (SKU). Contrary to the original planning, which envisaged securing the excavation pit with a soldier pile wall and constructing the spillway as a monolithic structure in cast-in-place concrete, the construction partners ultimately opted for a construction using semi-precast elements in panel construction. E+S Linear Shoring was used to secure the excavation pit, which was around 13 meters long, 8 meters wide and 8.50 meters deep. This decision paid off not only in view of the enormous dimensions of the excavation pit: After the installation of a longitudinal outer waling and bottom bracing of the pairs of beams, two roller units could be completely pulled out of the shoring. This created the spatial conditions on the construction site for the smooth installation of the large-format precast concrete elements of the spillway.
The spillway measures 9.70 meters in length from the inlet to the outlet and 6.30 meters in width. The chamber height is 4 meters from the foundation layer to the upper edge of the cover plate. E+S Linear Shoring was able to show its advantages when it came to securing the excavation pit. The design features of the system allow it to be used even for very large trench depths. In addition, the soil outside the excavation pit remains largely untouched. Even in the case of construction close to the trench, the soil remains free of settlement.
In addition, with a small amount of additional technical equipment, such as a waling, the linear shoring system can also be used to create enormously large working spaces, for example for the installation of large components, such as pipes with large nominal diameters, tanks, shaft structures or - as in Leipzig - for large-format precast concrete components. A total of four modules of the shoring system were installed for securing the excavation pit.
The civil engineering work was completed on schedule in December 2020. Despite the unusual conditions, such as the depth of the excavation pit, the heavy precast elements and the large-dimension pipes, the construction partners were very satisfied with the progress of the construction project.
