Flexible corner rail supports secured the new construction of the shaft structures.
The district town of Nördlingen and the districts of Holheim and Nähermemmingen, which also belong to Nördlingen, get their drinking water from the Ederheim spring area, which is about 6 kilometres from the city centre. At the end of 2014, the tubing, which was put into operation in 1896 and is now operated by the Nördlingen municipal utilities, was renewed on the last section:
The tunnelling through ‘Riegelberg’ and ‘Kampf’ made the remediation of around 1550 metres of pipeline in the last section particularly tricky. Both the laying of the pipeline in the tunnel and its dismantling posed a particular challenge for Carl Heuchel GmbH & Co. KG, the company contracted to carry out the work – as did the remedial works on the shaft structures, which had been built of masonry at the time and from which the tunnels had been driven using mining methods.
The old shafts were uncovered and demolished, and the original structures were replaced by new shaft structures made of reinforced concrete prefabricated parts in the course of laying the new pipeline. The company relied on the corner rail shoring from the EMMUNDS+Staudinger product brand from terra infrastructure for the safety fuse/safety device of the construction pits required for this.
Simple and flexible application
Corner rail shoring is a special shoring solution that is ideal for work on shaft structures, among other things. The system usually comprises four slide rail plates and four corner rail supports. This eliminates the need for special bracing systems. All forces are absorbed by the shoring plates. The system is not only stable but also easy and flexible to use: By using different panel lengths in pairs, rectangular excavations of various sizes can be realised – the system is equally powerful, affordable and economical.
With the appropriate beams, the corner rail shoring can optionally be executed as single-rail or as stepped shoring; the stepped alternative was used for the project in Nördlingen. Since several panels were installed, Filtering U-carriage was also used on site.
After a construction period of three months, the project was completed on schedule and the new pipeline was put into operation. Pressure testing and water sampling were successful. The supply of natural Ederheim spring water to Nördlingen, Holheim and Nähermemmingen is now permanently secured again.
