MOBILE FLOOD PROTECTION SYSTEM WITH THE TERRA BARRIER SYSTEM.
Mobile Flood protection system - terra Dammbalkensystem
Flood protection systems using sandbags used in the past involved a lot of people, large quantities of material and high costs. Today, reliable protection that is also economical to run can be set up in a single day using demountable protective barriers.

Lauenburg at the height of summer. A few hundred metres further on, the Elbe flows harmlessly past the old Palmschleuse lock. But this river can become a monster: Normally 5 metres deep, it can rise to 8.70 or even 9.12 metres, as the floods of 2002 and 2006 proved. Only thanks to the time-consuming and costly efforts of the fire brigade was it possible to save the historic half-timbered building next to the Palm Lock and the ‘Shun Lam’ Chinese restaurant inside it during these floods.

Traditionally, sandbags are used to provide temporary protection against flooding. However, when considering the total costs, such protection is often uneconomical, since, in addition to the production, transport and installation of the sandbags, the high costs for their subsequent disposal as hazardous waste must also be taken into account.

The terra stop log system from terra infrastructure is the ideal solution. A reinforced concrete base and a removable flood protection wall will prevent the building from being threatened by flooding in the future.

In June, the flood defence barrier was erected for the first time by employees of the water management office – on a trial basis. ‘If we are not disturbed, the wall can be built in a day,’ explains Andreas Sassenhagen, managing director of the water board. ‘It's a great system,’ enthuses foreman Wolfgang Genczik. The water board has invested a total of one million euros in the safety of the area between the Palm lock and the railway tracks adjacent to the Elbe-Lübeck canal.

In the area of a restaurant where the edge of the guest terrace coincides with the flood protection line, a mobile flood protection system in the form of a terra stop log system has been installed over a length of 80.50 metres. The 90 dam beam elements can be placed against the terrace wall to create a 1.30-metre-high barrier as a temporary protection against flooding. The dam beam elements are supported in a specially designed roll-off container with side doors.

We can provide a customised flood protection concept for every situation, including transport and storage requirements, that meets local conditions. The terra dam beam system has proven itself as a temporary flood protection measure in many situations – economically and ecologically. A dam beam plate, 2 metres in length, with a protection height of 1 metre, is the equivalent of approx. 320 sandbags! The system comprises a few aluminium elements that can be combined to form protective walls of different heights.

The height can be increased at a later stage, enabling a flexible and rapid response to changing conditions. The structure can be set up quickly with just a few workers. And thanks to its easy handling, such a wall can also be erected by unskilled workers.
