SECURITY IN DOUBLE PACK IN BERLIN-FROHNAU. IN-DEPTH LINEAR SHORING SECURES 10 METRE DEEP EXCAVATION.
It was a construction pit with potentially record-breaking dimensions – all of the construction partners involved in the sewer renovation project in Berlin-Frohnau agreed on this. Carl Zauber Tiefbau GmbH had initially received an order from the Reinickendorf civil engineering office to secure a so-called sinkhole in the forest settlement characterised by individual buildings and villas. The subsequent camera inspection of the sewer and the damage observed resulted in the follow-up order from Berliner Wasserbetriebe for the remedial works to the affected sewer section.

After considering various options, the executing company chose the e+s linear shoring system from thyssenkrupp Infrastructure for the construction work on the pipe, which was at a depth of up to 10 metres. Particularly noteworthy here is the fact that two linear shoring units were coupled together for the safety fuse / safety device of the excavation pit, which supplemented each other in their mode of operation after installation. And this was done while ensuring the load transfer required at the enormous depths achievable with this method.

The incident was preceded by a once-in-a-century rainfall event that caused widespread flooding in Berlin at the end of June 2017, with basements filling up, streets flooding and water cascading into underground stations, resulting in a two-day state of emergency in the capital. Causes such as these ultimately also caused the paved road surface to sink.

A viable concept developed

At this stage, attention was drawn to the linear shoring and thyssenkrupp Infrastructure was also found to be a competent partner with whom a viable concept for the safety fuse / safety device of an excavation at this depth was developed. The construction partners took advantage of this when securing the excavation in Berlin-Frohnau by using the so-called deeper liner shoring.

The deeper linear shoring, in which two shoring units are coupled together, connects the advantages of the linear shoring system to a high-performance functional principle that was ideal for the conditions at the sewer construction site. Unlike conventional linear shoring, the first module to be driven into the ground comprises double pairs of beams connected to each other at the upper end by a pulling adapter.

In the secured excavation, the damaged pipes could be replaced and a manhole structure renewed, before the excavation was backfilled again step by step, while at the same time pulling in the shoring elements.
